Chapter 8

GRACIE

Acra and Mannon were pissed off with me. More pissed off than usual, I mean. They had barely spoken two words all day, despite my efforts to make conversation. I had thought I was making progress with them, breaking down their barriers, but now we were back to the cold animosity they had first shown.

It was my own fault, of course. Hawk and I had snuck past them to go exploring and I wondered if they’d both gotten into trouble with Seshra for that. If so, no wonder they both looked like they were chewing on rocks as I opened the door to their knock.

Mannon stood there, holding out a bundle. “The paper and charcoal you asked for,” he said stiffly.

I took it from him. “Thank you.”

He didn’t reply but just turned away and took up his position next to Acra, facing away from me. I shut the door with a sigh and walked over to the table by the window, setting the paper and charcoal on it.

All morning I had been trying to come up with a way to make it up to Acra and Mannon. I felt bad for tricking them like that. Hawk would say I was stupid for feeling this way. After all, they were Unseelie and therefore enemies, right? But it was exactly that sort of thinking that had caused all this trouble in the first place. If we were ever going to mend the relations between the courts, we had to start making the effort somewhere, didn’t we?

I took out a fresh sheet of paper and began to sketch. The charcoal felt light in my grip as I ran it over the paper, slowly bringing forth my vision. As I worked, the details seemed to come alive on the page in front of me, each line adding something new. I lost track of time as I became immersed in my task.

Finally, I was finished. Rolling up the two sketches I had made, I crossed to the door, pulled it open, and stepped out into the corridor.

Acra and Mannon turned to look at me. “Do you need something?”

“No, actually,” I replied. “I have something for you both. I held out the scrolls and they took them gingerly.

“For us?” Mannon asked dubiously.

“Yes. A gift. Well, a peace offering really. You two are the closest things I’ve got to friends in this place and I’m sorry I upset you.”

They unrolled the sketches and looked at them. I scanned their faces eagerly, searching for any sign of their response. Fae expressions were difficult to read and I couldn’t tell what they were thinking as they examined the portraits I’d done of each of them. I fidgeted nervously as the silence stretched.

“Well?” I asked at last. “What do you think?”

Mannon was the first to speak. “Is this supposed to be me?” he said, pointing at his sketch.

Acra’s eyes widened. “And is that me?” she asked, pointing to her own portrait.

I smiled. “Yes,” I said proudly. “That’s you.”

Mannon snorted and shook his head at Acra.
